This has been a dark week in the history of Star Trek. I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Walter Koenig on October 25th, followed by Sir Patrick Stewart on October 29th. Our thoughts are with their family and loved ones, those who knew the individuals behind the curtains. Given that the original cast of Star Trek was first on the air in the late 1960’s, long before most, dare I say, all of us were born, the sad news concerning Mr. Koenig was an unwelcome reminder of the cruel passage of time.
Today, upon learning of the sudden death of Sir Patrick Stewart, my namesake since 2001, I could not help but think of this once thriving community and what Star Trek has meant to all of us. Joy and camaraderie, but also life lessons that shaped us as humans. We grew up watching Star Trek: The Next Generation and its 4 motion pictures. We knew Sir Patrick was of advanced age, but considering he was, until recently, a working actor, his passing came as a shock.
In an age when fame is an end in itself, which is used far too often for lesser pursuits, these gentlemen exemplified class and selflessness. They were able to touch and move countless individuals on a human level. Through their craft, they left a formidable legacy in our hearts and minds.
Please allow me to also use this occasion to convey my thanks and best wishes to all those who were part of this Star Trek adventure with me, whether or not you get to read this post.
To quote my namesake in Star Trek Generations:
Mr. Chekov, second star to the right and straight on till morning.Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives. But I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey, and reminds us to cherish every moment because they'll never come again. What we leave behind is not as important how we lived. After all, Number One, we're only mortal.
Godspeed.
